The history of this wine estate
We are pleased to introduce Chevalier Bayard, a vineyard located in Isère, in the commune of Pontcharra, on the border with Savoie. Cocolis is one of the delivery solutions adopted by Chevalier Bayard to ship wine to its customers all over France! 📦
Built by Pierre Terrail, the great-grandfather of the famous Chevalier Bayard "without fear and beyond reproach" in 1404, the château offers an exceptional setting. Classified as a historic monument, the magnificent property overlooks a 15-hectare park with a wine estate and opens its doors to host professional events and wine tastings.
The château was in ruins after the Revolution. Restored from 1890, still privately owned, it long housed a museum displaying the history of the brave and legendary Chevalier Bayard.
In 2006, Yves JEAN, its owner, obtained the rights to plant vines and partnered with Jean-Michel REYMOND, a talented young winemaker, to revive the wine estate that was once the château's main activity, even respecting the grape varieties of the time.
"The property, classified as a historic monument, has always lived from the vine. In the past, they cultivated 7 hectares of vines!" - Yves JEAN
They then replanted 1 hectare of vines (1/3 white, 2/3 red), just as in Bayard's time. The red is Persan and the white is Malvoisie. These grape varieties are suited to the climate: very hot summers, cold autumns.
Today, the Chevalier Bayard estate cultivates 2 hectares of vines at the château: one hectare of Persan for red wine, and one hectare of Malvoisie, Pinot Gris for white wine, as well as vines in Savoie: Mondeuse d’Arbin and Roussette de Savoie.
The Chevalier Bayard wines
Since 2006, Château Chevalier Bayard has been offering delicious IGP Isère wines (Malvoisie de Bayard and Persan) and AOP Savoie wines (Mondeuse and Roussette de Savoie). The Persan and Malvoisie white from the Chevalier Bayard estate have been awarded gold and silver medals respectively at the Paris Agricultural Show.
The grape varieties
Persan for the red wine, as it is a historic grape variety of the Alpine region. This wine has great acidity, a beautiful balance, and is a wine for ageing! A fruity, spicy, peppery red wine, perfect for Dauphinoise cuisine (gratin, mushrooms, etc.)
Malvoisie for the white, a variety of pinot gris from the Mediterranean or from Switzerland on the shores of Lake Geneva. The white wine is deliberately vinified with 5g of residual sugar, giving it more roundness and making it a great match for gastronomy! Production is currently 15,000 bottles per year.
The Cocolis team appreciates that the vineyard is cultivated in a sustainable way, and the soil is covered with grass.
